The Cumberland Narrows

Dramatic 1,000-foot rock gap immediately west of downtown.

The Cumberland Narrows is the natural pass through which Wills Creek breaks through Wills Mountain — a sheer, near-vertical gap with cliffs rising 1,000 feet on either side. US-40 (the old National Road), the CSX railroad, and Wills Creek itself all squeeze through this gap. From downtown Cumberland it is a five-minute drive west.

Stop at the small pull-out near the Lover's Leap viewpoint at the top of the south wall for the photograph. Active climbers will find established sport routes on the cliffs themselves. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad runs through the gap, providing one of the best views from inside a steam-hauled passenger car.

A story
The Narrows was the principal natural gap through the Allegheny Front for early European travellers heading west. George Washington came through here in 1748 as a young surveyor, and Braddock's army hauled artillery and supplies through it on the disastrous 1755 expedition to Fort Duquesne.
