Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum

Small museum dedicated to Northampton's most famous resident and 30th US president

Calvin Coolidge was a Northampton lawyer who rose from city solicitor to president of the United States, and the city is quietly proud of the connection. The Presidential Library and Museum in Forbes Library (the town's public library) occupies a few rooms dedicated to Coolidge's papers, photographs, and memorabilia.

The collection is modest in scale but the man is more interesting than his reputation as "Silent Cal" suggests. His papers are held here, and the library also has a good research collection. The house at 19–21 Massasoit Street where he lived before the presidency is a short walk away; it is a private residence now but the plaque is visible from the street.

A story
Coolidge was famously taciturn — so much so that when a dinner party guest told him she had bet she could get him to say more than two words, he replied, "You lose." He served as Massachusetts governor, then Vice President, then inherited the presidency when Warren Harding died in 1923. He announced he would not seek re-election in 1928 with a single slip of paper reading: "I do not choose to run for President in nineteen twenty-eight."
