Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is Northampton's big quiet outdoor escape, managed with help from the Broad Brook Coalition. The preserve covers woods, old pasture, marsh, and a lake, with a trail network that lets you make anything from a short boardwalk stroll to a longer loop through the northern edge of town.
It is a good counterweight to downtown Northampton's bookshops, cafes, and college-town bustle. Bring binoculars if you care about birds, or simply use it as a low-key place to walk, paddle, and remember that the Connecticut River Valley is as much wetland and forest as Main Street culture.
