Baxter Grist Mill

Restored West Yarmouth water-powered mill and herring-run stop on Route 28

Baxter Grist Mill is a small but satisfying Cape Cod history stop beside Route 28 in West Yarmouth. The mill site dates back more than three centuries, and the restored building recalls the practical side of old Yarmouth: grain, water power, pond, and road rather than beaches and summer houses. The nearby herring run gives the place a little natural life as well as historic texture.

Do not expect a major museum. This is a short stop with a parking area, a mill building, and a sense of how the town worked before tourism took over the Cape. It pairs well with the Judah Baker Windmill and Route 6A if you are tracing Yarmouth's older landscape.
