Route 6A — Old King's Highway

Route 6A through Yarmouthport is one of the most scenic drives on Cape Cod — the Old King's Highway, which ran the length of the peninsula before the turnpike arrived. Through Yarmouthport, it's a canopied road of mature oaks and maples, lined with sea captains' houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries, antique shops, small galleries, and the occasional general store.

The best way to experience it is on foot or by bicycle: drive through quickly and you miss the details. Park at the Yarmouthport village centre and walk east or west along the road. The houses here were built by men who made fortunes on the China trade, the whaling industry, and the coastal packet trade. Some are open as museums; others are private homes that look exactly as they have for two centuries.
