Battle Creek is a southern Michigan city best known for breakfast cereal. The Kellogg name still defines much of the local story, but the city is more interesting than a factory label: it has health-reform history, old civic buildings, a good zoo, and deep ties to Sojourner Truth.
The centre is small and easy to read. The former Battle Creek Sanitarium, now a federal centre, still dominates the skyline, while museums and monuments explain the reformers, abolitionists, doctors, and entrepreneurs who passed through town.
Battle Creek is not a headline Michigan destination, but it is a worthwhile stop between Kalamazoo, Lansing, and the state's southern lake country.
