Kalamazoo is one of those Midwestern cities whose name is famous before the place is. The reality is better than the joke: a college town and county seat in south-west Michigan, with Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, a strong arts scene, and a downtown that once created the first outdoor pedestrian mall in the United States.
The city has enough for a full day without pretending to be Chicago or Detroit. Air Zoo is the big family draw, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Kalamazoo Valley Museum cover art and local history, and Bell's Eccentric Cafe gives the city a real place in American craft beer.
Kalamazoo works especially well as a low-key stop between Chicago, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. It is not flashy, but it is walkable, useful, and more interesting than its highway exits suggest.
