Marquette Maritime Museum

Small museum on Lake Superior shipping and shipwrecks, with the harbor lighthouse

The Marquette Maritime Museum, in a small brick building right on the harbour, tells the story of Lake Superior shipping, the iron-ore freighters that built the city, and the many shipwrecks scattered along this stretch of coast. The exhibits are modest but well-curated, with an Edmund Fitzgerald display that is particularly moving.

Admission includes a guided tour of the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse, the red brick beacon that has stood watch over the harbour entrance since 1866 and still functions today. The walk out to the light gives one of the better viewpoints back over the downtown waterfront.
