Sugarloaf Mountain

Short steep hike with a panoramic view of Marquette and Lake Superior

Sugarloaf is a glacial hill north of Marquette with a short, steep trail to a rocky summit. The climb takes about 30 minutes on the well-built wooden staircase or longer if you take the dirt trail; the view from the top stretches from Marquette across to Presque Isle, Granite Island, and (on a clear day) the Huron Mountains far to the northwest.

It's the single best panoramic view of Marquette and one of the most popular short hikes in the Upper Peninsula. Sunset is the magic moment but also the most crowded — get there 45 minutes ahead to claim a spot at the summit.
