Marquette

Lake Superior city on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, edged by red sandstone bluffs and deep winter snow

Marquette is the largest city on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, set on the shore of Lake Superior with dramatic red sandstone bluffs and long views across the water. In winter it is one of the snowiest cities in the eastern United States — good for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. In summer the lake comes alive with kayaking, fishing, and swimming at Presque Isle Park.

The town itself has a lively downtown with brewpubs and restaurants, and hosts the Art on the Rocks festival and the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, with its multicoloured sandstone cliffs, is an easy day trip to the east. Climb Sugarloaf Mountain for the best view in town.
