Owamni by The Sioux Chef

Owamni is a restaurant by The Sioux Chef, an Indigenous food initiative founded by chef Sean Sherman, located on the banks of the Mississippi River adjacent to Saint Anthony Falls. The menu is built entirely from ingredients available in North America before European colonisation — no wheat, dairy, beef, pork, or cane sugar — and draws on Indigenous cooking traditions from across the continent.

Dishes might include bison tartare with wojapi (berry sauce), cedar-braised duck with wild rice, or smoked trout with nettle sauce. The cooking is sophisticated rather than ethnographic, using traditional ingredients in a contemporary fine-dining context. The restaurant received a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2022. Reservations are strongly advised and can be made weeks in advance.

A story
Sean Sherman, who grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, founded the Sioux Chef catering company in 2014 with the goal of reclaiming Indigenous food traditions that had been erased by government boarding school policies and the systematic replacement of Native diets with commodity foods. Owamni — the Dakota name for Saint Anthony Falls — opened in 2021 and won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2022, the first restaurant focusing on pre-colonial Indigenous cuisine to receive that recognition.
