Gulf Coast Beach

The Biloxi beach runs for roughly 26 miles along Highway 90, from Long Beach in the west through Biloxi and Gulfport to Ocean Springs in the east. The sand is white and the water warm from May through October. The beach is artificial — the sand was imported — but it works. After Hurricane Katrina stripped the coast bare, the restored beach is genuinely pleasant, with lifeguarded sections and public access points throughout.

The water is calm and shallow, protected from Gulf swells by a chain of barrier islands several miles offshore. Ship Island (accessible by ferry from Gulfport) offers the best swimming, with Fort Massachusetts — a pre-Civil War brick fort — as an added attraction. The near-shore fishing, particularly for redfish and speckled trout, is popular among locals.
