Longwood

Longwood is unlike anything else in Natchez — a massive octagonal mansion topped by a Byzantine-style dome, left permanently unfinished when the Civil War ended construction in 1861. From the outside it looks complete; step inside and the upper five floors are an open shell of raw brick and timber, with the workmen's original tools still scattered across the floors exactly where they were abandoned over 160 years ago.

The ground-floor rooms were finished and furnished by the Nutt family, who lived here for decades after the war despite never having the resources to complete the upper floors. Pilgrimage Garden Club tours take you through both the finished rooms and the eerie upper shell. It is about a mile south of the main historic district, making it a short drive from downtown.

A story
Construction of Longwood stopped abruptly in September 1861 when the Northern craftsmen building it received news of the Civil War and walked off the job mid-task, leaving their tools still sitting in the unfinished upper floors. The tools are still there. Owner Haller Nutt died in 1864, never having finished his dream house, and only the ground floor was ever inhabited.
