The main attraction in Natchez is the collection of antebellum mansions — Longwood, Stanton Hall, Rosalie, and many others are open for tours. Some are house museums, others are still private homes that open during the twice-yearly Natchez Pilgrimage in spring and fall.
Horse-drawn carriage tours through the historic district are a good way to get oriented. The guides are locals who know the stories behind every house, and the tours run from morning to evening. The Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center, just north of town, is the starting point for the scenic 444-mile drive to Nashville. Below the bluff, the Mississippi riverfront is worth a walk — and the view back up to the town from the water's edge puts the bluff-top setting in perspective.
