This small museum on Main Street fills a significant gap in the Natchez story that the plantation tour circuit tends to gloss over. Where the mansion tours tell the story of the cotton economy from the perspective of those who profited from it, this museum grounds visitors in the lives of the enslaved people who built that wealth — and of the free Black community that navigated the city's complicated racial landscape.
Exhibits cover the pre-Civil War slave trade (Natchez was the second-largest slave market in the South, after New Orleans), the free Black community of the antebellum period, the civil rights era, and the African American cultural heritage of the region. The museum is small and community-run, and worth an hour of anyone's time in Natchez.
