The Missouri Governor's Mansion is a handsome Second Empire structure built in 1871, set on a terrace above the Missouri River near the Capitol. With its mansard roof and elaborate Victorian interiors, it is one of the more impressive governor's residences in the country, and public tours are available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings when the governor isn't in residence.
The grounds offer a good view down to the river, and the house itself shows the aspirations of Missouri's political class in the Gilded Age. Tours cover the formal reception rooms on the ground floor with their period furniture, portraits of former governors, and original architectural details.
