Ennis is a quieter base for Yellowstone than the busier west-entrance towns — the West Yellowstone entrance is about 90 minutes south on Highway 287, with the Madison River for company most of the way. Virginia City, a preserved 1860s gold-rush town, is 14 miles west on Highway 287. Bozeman is a 75-minute drive north and has the nearest airport, university and proper grocery store. The mining city of Butte, two hours west, is a strange and worthwhile half-day for anyone interested in the rougher history of the American West.
