Chadron

Nebraska Panhandle college town with fur-trade history, High Plains museums, and Pine Ridge parkland nearby.

Chadron sits in the Nebraska Panhandle, where the flat Great Plains begin to wrinkle into the Pine Ridge. It is a small college town and service centre, but it has more travel weight than that suggests: fur-trade history, High Plains literature, fossils, and Nebraska's first state park all cluster close enough for a good spare day.

The strongest stop is the Museum of the Fur Trade, just east of town on the site of the old Bordeaux Trading Post. In town, the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center gives the region a literary voice, while the college geology museum adds fossils and minerals to the mix.

Chadron is also a useful base for Pine Ridge country. Chadron State Park is close enough for an easy hike, and Crawford's Fort Robinson is a short drive west. If you are crossing western Nebraska on US-20 or US-385, Chadron is worth more than a fuel stop.
