The Sunken Gardens is a free public garden in the southwest part of downtown Lincoln, maintained by the city since 1930. Planted in a natural depression that once held a lagoon, the terraced garden features seasonal plantings of annuals — tens of thousands of flowers changed out twice a year — as well as a reflecting pool, fountains, and a small waterfall. It is at its most colorful from June through August when the summer plantings are in full bloom.
The garden is a genuine local institution, used by Lincolnites for walking, photography, and the occasional wedding. For travelers it makes a pleasant 20-minute detour, especially in summer. Admission is free and the garden is open daily from dawn to dusk. The adjacent Antelope Park offers additional green space and is connected to Lincoln's extensive trail system.
