Minden Christmas Lights

Minden has called itself the "Christmas City" of the Great Plains for decades, and the holiday light display that covers the courthouse square and the surrounding blocks from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day is the reason. The displays are elaborate by small-town standards — thousands of lights decorating the courthouse, the historic commercial buildings, and the trees along the main streets — and the tradition draws visitors from across Kearney County and the wider south-central Nebraska region.

The display is best seen after dark on a clear evening. The downtown square, anchored by the Kearney County Courthouse and the W.T. Thorne Building, is the centrepiece, but the lights extend through several blocks of the residential streets as well. For a town that is quiet for most of the year, the Christmas season gives Minden a genuinely festive character.

If you are planning a visit to Pioneer Village and have flexibility on timing, the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas window combines the museum with the light display for a more rounded sense of the town.
