Littleton's Main Street is regularly cited as one of the finest small-town main streets in New England, and the designation is deserved. A continuous run of well-preserved 19th-century brick buildings houses an unusually independent mix of shops: a bookstore, art galleries, a hardware store that's been in business for decades, clothing boutiques, and several good places to eat and drink. The street runs parallel to the Ammonoosuc River, and a footbridge at the lower end connects to a riverside path. Unlike many revived main streets, this one still serves locals as much as visitors — which is exactly what makes it worth a slow walk.
