The Jitneys — small pale-blue minibuses that run in a loop around the island — are Atlantic City's answer to public transport. They stop in front of every casino and every few blocks in between, run every few minutes, and cost a couple of dollars per ride. Taxis are plentiful for short hops around town and are reasonable in-town (around $6–11), though long-distance fares rise sharply. For trips up and down the boardwalk itself, the most characteristic option is a rolling chair — a padded two-seat cart pushed by an attendant, a local tradition dating from the 1880s. Fares are negotiable, usually $10–30 depending on distance. Parking at the casinos is cheap or free if you are playing, and most visitors find they don't need a car once they have arrived.
