Things to Do

The central Atlantic City experience is to walk the Boardwalk, ride a rolling chair (a uniquely Atlantic City institution — you sit in a padded two-person cart pushed by an attendant), play the slots at one of the casinos, eat saltwater taffy, and watch the Atlantic roll in. Beyond that, the Absecon Lighthouse at the north end of the boardwalk is open for climbs and has good views down the island; the Steel Pier, in front of Resorts Casino, has a 67-metre Ferris wheel, carnival rides and carnival food; and the Ocean Life Center aquarium in Gardner's Basin, just off the boardwalk, is a modest but pleasant stop with children. Nearby, in Margate, Lucy the Elephant is one of the strangest sights in New Jersey — a 20-metre wooden elephant built in 1881 as a real-estate stunt, now a National Historic Landmark that you can climb inside. For shopping, The Walk outlet stores and The Pier Shops at Caesars between them cover most brands.
