Lucy the Elephant

Six-storey elephant-shaped Victorian landmark beside Atlantic City's southern shore

Lucy the Elephant is exactly what it sounds like: a giant elephant-shaped building, six storeys high, built in the 1880s as a piece of seaside real-estate promotion. It has outlasted the gimmick and become one of the Jersey Shore's most beloved oddities.

The short tour takes you inside the structure and up to views over Margate and the Atlantic City skyline. It is not in central Atlantic City, but the detour is worthwhile if you like vernacular architecture, roadside Americana, or attractions with a sense of humour.
