Belmar Boardwalk

Rebuilt after Sandy, the boardwalk runs south toward Spring Lake along the ocean front

The Belmar boardwalk was rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy destroyed it in 2012 and runs for about a mile along the oceanfront, connecting south toward the Spring Lake border. It is a simple, well-maintained wooden walkway — no arcades, no rides — used mostly by joggers in the morning and walkers in the evening. Cyclists are allowed in the early hours.

At the southern end it connects to the Spring Lake boardwalk, which continues through the quieter, more upscale town to the south. Running the combined stretch is a solid five-kilometre route with unbroken ocean views. In the evening, the boardwalk fills with people drifting between the beach and the Main Street bars — a leisurely Shore ritual that needs no improvement.

A story
Superstorm Sandy in October 2012 destroyed the original Belmar boardwalk almost entirely. The town rebuilt it within a year — a faster turnaround than most of the Shore managed — and the new structure is wider and more durable than what came before. Local residents who walked the old boardwalk for decades say the rebuilt version is better.
