When to Go

Belmar is a summer town. The beach is the reason to come, and the beach is best from late June through Labor Day in September, when water temperatures reach 20–24°C, lifeguards are on duty, and all the bars, restaurants, and rental operations are fully open. Memorial Day weekend through mid-June and Labor Day through October form the shoulder season — cooler and less crowded, with most businesses still operating. Beach badges are required and enforced from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Peak summer weekends (late July through August) are genuinely busy. Ocean Avenue parking fills by 10am on Saturdays, D'Jais has hour-long waits, and the beach is packed. This is part of the authentic Shore experience, but if crowds are not your thing, aim for weekdays even in peak season — the difference is significant. A Tuesday or Wednesday in August is a completely different experience from a Saturday.

The off-season (October through May) is quiet to the point of emptiness. Most restaurants reduce to limited schedules or close entirely; a few bars stay open for locals and hardened regulars. The beach remains accessible year-round without badges, and winter walks on an empty Jersey Shore beach have a particular quality. Belmar is one of the closer Shore towns to New York City, which makes it a viable year-round escape when the weather cooperates.
