Ithaca Falls

Six-tiered waterfall at the foot of Fall Creek, walking distance from downtown

The most accessible of the city's waterfalls. Park at the small lot on Lake Street, walk five minutes along the path through hemlocks, and the sound of falling water arrives before you see anything. The falls drop 150 feet in six broken tiers across the width of Fall Creek — wider than they are tall, and especially full after spring snowmelt.

A flat dirt path leads to the base, where in summer locals fish for trout in the plunge pool. The rocks below the falls are off-limits — old industrial-era lead contamination in the soil — so stay on the path. The view from the bridge upstream is also worth the short detour.
