State Theatre

1928 movie palace turned non-profit live music venue

A baroque-fantastical movie palace from 1928, a block off the Commons on West State Street, restored in the early 2000s and now Ithaca's main mid-size concert hall. The programming runs from indie rock and folk to comedy and dance — anything that needs more seats than the smaller Hangar Theatre offers but less than Cornell's giant Bailey Hall.

Even outside show time, the lobby is worth a quick look during business hours. The painted ceilings, ornamented pillars, and gilded balcony rails make the case for going to whatever is on, regardless of whether the act would normally interest you.

A story
The State opened in 1928 with a screening of the silent film The Big Parade and a stage performance by a vaudeville troupe. After decades of decline it nearly closed for good in 1997, but a community campaign raised the money to buy it, restore the interior, and turn it into a 1,600-seat non-profit concert hall. The Moorish-Spanish decoration, all twisting plaster and painted stars, came back almost exactly as it was.
