National Comedy Center

The National Comedy Center opened in 2018 in a restored former rail depot at the western end of downtown Jamestown. It is the first museum in the country devoted to comedy as an art form: 50-odd exhibits spread across two floors, with interactive booths where you can write jokes, perform a stand-up set, mix laugh tracks, or watch curated clips of every era of American comedy from vaudeville to the present.

The collection is genuinely strong — Carl Reiner's typewriter, George Carlin's archive of "seven words" notebooks, props from Seinfeld and The Office, and footage you don't see elsewhere. Allow at least three hours; the technology is well integrated and the route loops back on itself easily. The adjoining Lucy-Desi Museum, a couple of blocks away on West Third Street, is included on the combined ticket and worth the extra hour.

A story
When Lucille Ball was dying in 1989 she told her hometown that what she really wanted was for Jamestown to have a museum honouring not her, but the craft of comedy itself. Three decades later the National Comedy Center finally opened — designated by an act of Congress as the official cultural institution dedicated to comedy in the United States.
