Syracuse is the obvious closest city — 30 km northeast for museums (the Everson and the Erie Canal Museum) and the historic Armory Square district. South and west of Skaneateles, the rest of the Finger Lakes opens up: Owasco Lake, Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake — each with its own clutch of wineries, waterfalls and historic villages. Watkins Glen at the south end of Seneca Lake is the most spectacular state-park gorge in the region and a long but feasible day trip.
