Mid-Lakes Navigation Mailboat

Mailboat and sightseeing cruises down Skaneateles Lake

The mailboat departs the village dock in Clift Park most mornings from late June through early September, looping down the lake on a three-hour trip while delivering and collecting mail at private cottages. Sightseeing cruises and Sunday brunch trips run on a similar schedule for those who do not need the postal experience.

Tickets sell out on summer weekends — book ahead. The boats are restored wooden launches with shaded decks; a sweater for the morning crossing is a good idea even in July. The same company runs Erie Canal cruises further north.

A story
Mid-Lakes Navigation has run the mailboat service down Skaneateles Lake since 1968 — one of the last working mailboat routes in the United States. The crew delivers post to 50 or so lakeside cottages, leaping ashore from a moving boat to drop letters in the boxes nailed to the docks.
