Salt Museum

Small Onondaga Lake museum explaining Syracuse’s salt-making past.

The Salt Museum tells the surprisingly important story behind Syracuse’s old nickname, the Salt City. Set by Onondaga Lake, it explains the brine springs and salt works that helped drive the city’s early growth.

It is a small museum, but the subject is specific enough to justify the stop if you are already exploring the lakefront or Erie Canal history. Together with the Erie Canal Museum, it gives Syracuse a clearer industrial and geographic identity.
