Historic Latta Plantation

Historic Latta Plantation is a preserved cotton plantation on the shores of Mountain Island Lake, about 20 kilometres north of Uptown. The main house dates to around 1800 and has been carefully restored, along with a collection of outbuildings including slave cabins, a kitchen, and farm structures. The site is honest about its history — tours cover not just the architecture and domestic life of the Latta family but the lives of the enslaved people who made the plantation function.

The surrounding parkland is managed as a nature preserve, with hiking and equestrian trails through forest and wetland. Adjacent to the plantation is the Raptor Center, which rehabilitates injured birds of prey and maintains an educational facility where visitors can see eagles, hawks, and owls at close range. The plantation and the nature preserve together make a good half-day trip from the city.
