Romare Bearden Park is a five-acre green space in Uptown Charlotte, named for the abstract artist who was born in the city in 1911 and went on to become one of the most celebrated African-American visual artists of the twentieth century. The park opened in 2013 and its design draws on Bearden's signature collage style — geometric forms, water features, and planting that together create a dynamic rather than static space.
The park has quickly become one of the most popular gathering spots in Uptown, with food truck parks, summer concerts, and the general flow of city life around it. On warm evenings it fills with office workers, families, and visitors. The interactive fountain is particularly good for children. Across the road is the home stadium of the Charlotte Knights minor league baseball team, and the pairing of a ballgame with a walk through the park makes for a pleasant Charlotte evening.
