Currie

North Carolina village known for Moores Creek National Battlefield and its decisive Patriot victory.

Currie is best known as the location of the Moores Creek National Battlefield, an 88-acre park commemorating the decisive Patriot victory of February 27, 1776. A force of 1,000 Patriots defeated 1,600 Loyalists at the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, ending Royal Governor Josiah Martin's hopes of reclaiming the colony for the British crown.

The victory raised morale throughout the colonies and ended British plans for an invasion force to land in Brunswick, North Carolina. Barely two months later, North Carolina became one of the first colonies to vote for independence from Britain. The park, established in 1926, has a visitor center with exhibits on the battle and walking trails through the battlefield.

Things to Do

The single reason to come to Currie is the Moores Creek National Battlefield. Allow a couple of hours for the visitor centre, the bridge, and the walking trails — there is little else in town.
