Hickory

Foothills North Carolina city shaped by furniture, folk art, short-track racing, and beer.

Hickory sits in the western North Carolina foothills, between Charlotte and the Blue Ridge. It is not a postcard mountain town, and that is part of its character: railroads, furniture factories, Lutheran colleges, outlet shopping, craft beer, and old mill-town self-confidence all show up in the same compact city.

The strongest travel hook is Hickory's furniture identity, but the city is not only a shopping stop. The SALT Block brings art and science together, with Hickory Museum of Art and Catawba Science Center side by side. Hickory Motor Speedway adds a different kind of local culture, loud and proudly unpolished.

Hickory is worth adding if you are crossing the foothills or want a Piedmont day that is not just another courthouse square. Come for folk art, stock cars, downtown beer, and a city that still carries the memory of making things.
