Free Expression Tunnel

The Free Expression Tunnel on the NC State University campus is a pedestrian underpass that has been continuously repainted by students since 1964 — a designated space where any member of the university community can paint anything they like, replacing whatever was there before. The result is a constantly changing, densely layered work of student expression: political statements, tributes to sports victories, personal messages, and occasionally genuine art coexist in a compressed visual space.

The tunnel connects two parts of the campus under Western Boulevard and is worth a quick detour if you are anywhere near NC State. The content shifts dramatically over the course of a semester; what you see one week may be entirely different the next.
