Mordecai Historic Park preserves one of Raleigh's oldest houses along with other historic buildings moved to the site. It is a compact way to understand the city's early development, plantation history, and nineteenth-century domestic architecture.
The park also includes the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, adding a complicated presidential footnote to the visit. Take a guided tour if available; the buildings need interpretation to connect them to Raleigh's growth and the harder histories behind it.
