Eating Out

Salisbury punches above its weight for a small town. The downtown blocks of Main Street and Innes Street hold a handful of properly good restaurants, several owned by chefs who trained in Charlotte or Greensboro and moved here for the slower pace and the cheaper rent. North Carolina barbecue — pulled pork, vinegar sauce, hush puppies, sweet tea — is well represented, and Hap's Grill on East Innes is a classic 1930s slaw-dog counter that has been serving the same menu for nearly a century. Look for Cheerwine-glazed ribs and Cheerwine-soaked cake on local dessert menus; both are a Salisbury speciality.
