Winkler Bakery

Winkler Bakery, on the main street of Old Salem, has been baking continuously since 1807 in the same wood-fired brick oven. The recipes for Moravian sugar cake, lovefeast buns and ginger cookies have not changed in two centuries — the cookies are still hand-rolled, and the sugar cake is still topped with the same proportion of brown sugar and cinnamon stamped into thumb-pressed wells across the surface.

You can step inside any morning, watch the bakers at the long table by the oven, and buy a warm cake to take away. The lovefeast buns — slightly sweet, slightly cardamom-scented — were originally baked only for the Moravian lovefeast service; now they are a town signature. Bring cash; sales are quick and the queue forms early on weekends.
