German Village Historic District

The German Village neighborhood preserves a compact grid of 19th-century brick houses and institutional buildings built by Hamilton's German community. The area retains its historic street pattern and architectural character better than most comparable neighborhoods in small Ohio cities.

A good neighborhood for an aimless walk — several of the buildings have plaques explaining their history. North of downtown, centered around Dayton Street.

A story
Hamilton attracted large numbers of German immigrants in the mid-19th century who settled north of downtown in a neighborhood that retains much of its original brick rowhouse character. The area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a quiet alternative to the commercial downtown bustle.
