Sugarcreek

Ohio Amish Country village with Swiss murals, a giant cuckoo clock, and a serious steam railroad museum.

Sugarcreek is a small Tuscarawas County village that sells its Swissness with a straight face: painted chalets, cheese shops, polka, and a huge cuckoo clock in the middle of town. It sits in Ohio Amish Country, but its own personality is more alpine festival than buggy postcard.

The downtown clock is the obvious stop, and it is worth timing for the half-hour figures if you are already in the area. The better reason to make the detour is the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum, a purpose-built brick roundhouse full of preserved locomotives and rail equipment.

Sugarcreek is best as a half-day or slow day from Berlin, Walnut Creek, or Dover. Come for the clock, see the roundhouse, then use the Alpine Hills Historical Museum to understand how Swiss, German, and Amish stories got braided into one very odd little village.
