Lucas County Courthouse

The Lucas County Courthouse on Adams Street is downtown Toledo's most imposing 19th-century building — a Beaux-Arts pile of Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone topped with a 196-foot dome, completed in 1897. The interior atrium is open to the public on weekdays and is worth a look for the marble staircases, the bronze and marble figures, and the murals in the rotunda.

It's one of the more grandly built American county courthouses of its era — a reminder that Toledo at the turn of the 20th century had ambitions to become an industrial capital of the Great Lakes, fuelled by the glass industry and Toledo Edison electricity. The Lucas County jail next door, from the same period, is less open but worth a look from the outside.
