When to Go to Hugo

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit southeastern Oklahoma. March through May brings mild temperatures and wildflowers across the Kiamichi hills; October and November offer cooler weather and the beginnings of fall colour. Summers are hot and humid — highs regularly reach the mid-30s Celsius — and while Hugo Lake offers relief, the heat can make outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable between midday and late afternoon.

Winter is when Hugo is most itself: the Carson & Barnes Circus traditionally returns to its winter quarters in this period, and the town has a quiet authenticity away from tourist season. The annual circus festival typically takes place in late spring or early summer — check local listings for exact dates, as it varies by year.
