Hidden on the Bacone College campus on the north side of town, the Ataloa Lodge is one of the most underrated Native American art collections in the country. Founded in 1932 by the Chickasaw educator and poet Ataloa, it contains some 20,000 objects — pottery, beadwork, baskets, weapons, paintings — assembled from across the Americas. The stone lodge itself is a quiet, atmospheric building. Open to walk-in visitors but call ahead to confirm hours, particularly outside semester. Bacone College has had a turbulent recent history but the museum continues to operate.
