Fort Gibson Historic Site

Eight miles east of Muskogee, this is the oldest military post in Oklahoma — established in 1824 to keep peace among the various Native American nations being forcibly relocated into Indian Territory. A reconstruction of the original log stockade stands alongside surviving 1840s stone buildings, including the powder magazine and the commissary. Daily guided tours fill out a substantial picture of frontier life in the southern plains. Worth combining with a drive across the bridge to Fort Gibson Lake, where the reconstructed fort overlooks the impounded Grand River.
