A 132-acre park and arboretum on a low hillside two miles west of downtown, with mature trees, three lakes, themed gardens, and — most famously — about 30,000 azaleas of more than 600 varieties. Peak bloom is mid-April. The Five Civilized Tribes Museum sits at one entrance to the park. The driving loop through the gardens is just under three miles and there are pleasant walking paths around the lakes; pavilions and picnic shelters are scattered throughout. Free to enter; busy in April but otherwise quiet.
Honor Heights Park
A story
Originally created in the 1920s as a memorial to American soldiers killed in World War I, the park has been quietly expanded and replanted for nearly a century. Its **Azalea Festival** every April draws around 100,000 visitors over the month, more than triple the town's resident population — and the park keeps adding new cultivars every year.
