Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art

The University of Oklahoma's main art museum is housed in a low, sand-coloured Postmodern building on the western edge of the campus. The collection runs from Greek and Roman antiquities to 20th-century American art, but the heart of it is the Weitzenhoffer Collection of French Impressionist paintings — one of the most important regional collections of its kind in the country.

The Native American galleries on the upper floor hold strong holdings of Plains, Pueblo, and Northwest Coast art, including a famous group of Eugene B. Adkins paintings of the American Southwest. Free admission; closed Mondays. Allow at least 90 minutes.

A story
The museum's strongest single holding is the Weitzenhoffer Collection of French Impressionism — 33 paintings by Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Degas, donated in 2000 by an Oklahoma City couple. It is, surprisingly, the largest Impressionist gift ever made to a public American university and turned a regional gallery into a destination.
