Elk Lake is one of the most appealing summer lake trips from Bend, set along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway with views toward the surrounding volcanic peaks. The water is used for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and lazy shoreline days when Bend's high-desert heat makes the mountains irresistible.
It is popular, so do not expect solitude on warm weekends. Come early for parking, or stay nearby if you want sunrise and quieter water. Outside the main summer season, snow and road closures can change access entirely, which is part of the rhythm of the Cascade Lakes.
