Bend

Central Oregon outdoor city on the Deschutes River, with Cascade skiing and high-desert trails nearby.

Bend is central Oregon's outdoor capital, a small city on the Deschutes River with the Cascade Range rising immediately to the west. In winter people ski and snowboard at Mount Bachelor; in summer they mountain bike, hike, paddle, and fish. The town itself has grown from a logging settlement into a craft-beer-and-adventure hub with a lively downtown, good restaurants, and an easy, outdoorsy energy.

The Old Mill District along the river has shops and restaurants in converted industrial buildings. Drake Park and Mirror Pond — reached on foot via the Deschutes River Trail — are the heart of downtown. The High Desert Museum south of town is one of Oregon's best small museums, part natural history, part living exhibit, with raptors, porcupines, and a walk-through desert canyon.

Day trips are excellent: Crater Lake National Park is two hours south, Smith Rock State Park (world-class rock climbing) is half an hour north, and the Newberry National Volcanic Monument — with obsidian flows, a caldera lake, and lava tubes — is just outside town. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway loops past a string of alpine lakes ideal for kayaking and swimming in summer.

The craft beer scene is a genuine draw. Deschutes Brewery, founded here in 1988, helped put Bend on the map; Bend Brewing Company, on Mirror Pond, has the best outdoor patio. The Tower Theatre on Wall Street anchors the cultural life of downtown. For orientation and history, the Deschutes Historical Museum covers everything from the Paiute people through the timber era. And Pilot Butte, a volcanic cinder cone at the edge of town, gives a 360-degree view of the entire Cascade Range in about 30 minutes on foot.
